Snowy Mays
Snow falls to sea level near Hobart. During July in Tasmania two fronts swept through on separate occasions delivering settled snow as low as 200m and flakes to the shoreline. I was hoping to capture the rare occasion with an equally rare backdrop. The fickle points near Hobart don't often break but on this occasion the timing was perfect. An early low tide coincided with the light flurries to produce this spectacular scene. There was one guy out enjoying the cold uncrowded conditions, getting slotted on the larger wave in this very photo. After I took this shot I ran down for a surf. Later that afternoon I headed up to Fern Tree (about 200m asl) for a ski on the settled snow. It was surprisingly good quality, fast and not sticky. There isnt many places in the world where you can surf and ski within 20km, and Tasmania is one of these places.
